How do you get that first draft of your book finished and how do
you know when your book is done?
There is no doubt that discipline and writing daily are keys to
getting that first draft done.
What new writers often do not know is that there
are writing days and editing days. When you believe your book is
done and you cannot write any more, that is the time to sit back,
relax, and read it as if you were someone else -- one of your readers,
perhaps. You will see many things that you want to change.
Our article on completing the first draft is a good place to start if you are looking
for information on this subject. We also have another article entitled
When to Stop.
Sometimes people come to us with what they believe is a completed
first draft. That was the case with Bob Garrow and
Ahoy Mates. We did a manuscript evaluation
and made recommendations, then worked with him weekly for the next
six months. What emerged was a fun little leadership book that readers
love!
That was also the case with Sharon Matthies and her book Eagle
Born to Fly. She had taken her book as far as she could
on her own. Perhaps it had been through many iterations before we
saw it, but it required very little input from us before it was
ready for our graphic designer and printer.
