So you are writing a book and starting to think
about your cover. Perhaps you have been sketching a little or talking
to your teenage cousin, Joey, the artist. Stop. Your book cover design
needs to be done professionally if you want your book to be taken
seriously -- unless you are an artist or graphic designer
in addition to being a writer, in which case please
do not let us stop your creativity.
If, like most writers, you are primarily a writer
not a visual artist, then you must leave the book cover design
to the professionals. Spend your time where it should be spent,
not in dreaming of a cover and sketching, but in writing. You will
be amazed how a professional book cover designer,
after reading your book and having a conversation with you, will
come up with cover designs that both astound and
please you. Two particularly interesting cases of book cover design
can be found in our case studies of Sharon Matthies’ Eagle
Born to Fly and Allyson McQuinn’s The
Path to Cure.
Please, please use a professional graphic designer
for the cover of your book. Even if you must use cousin Joey’s
sketches or Aunt Mary’s painting of the family log cabin,
let a professional graphic designer work with these
to create a book cover that your hard work deserves.
