It Clear > Writing Purpose
Why do you write? Before even beginning a writing
project, every writer must ask the personal question,
“Why am I doing this?” If you start book writing
without giving this sufficient thought, you will lose your focus
and have difficulty not only writing a book but
also finding a book publisher and marketing
your book.
There will be two products after you finish writing a book,
the book, and you. So, why are you writing? What
is your focus? Are
you writing because you have a burning desire to
say something? Are you writing because you have
some special information that you want to get out to the world?
Or are you perhaps writing to establish your credibility
in a particular field? Perhaps you are writing
because you want to add an additional stream of income to your business.
Whatever your purpose is for writing a book, you
must keep it in the front of your mind throughout the writing
process. Know that whichever reason or reasons drive your writing;
you and your life will be different afterward. Just think of it.
If you have always wanted to tell a story and it is burning inside
of you, how different you will be after you have finished becoming
a writer and published a book! And imagine being
an expert in a particular field or having that additional stream of
income from your published book. Wow!
The next question to ask before you even think about writing
or publishing a book is: How will you go about marketing
your book? Who
indeed is your market? Whether you are seeking a publisher
or intend to self-publish your book, its
success will depend on how many books actually sell. So while you
are writing the book, you must get to know
your market well and think about how your readers will be different
after they read this book.
No kidding! You want people to get on a plane in Chicago and get
off in Toronto, having read your book, and be different. What will
they know after reading your book? How will they think or act differently?
Has anyone you know ever said to you, “I have just read the
most fantastic book. You must read it! It changed my life!”
You want to please readers.
Just imagine if they said fantastic things about your published
book!
To help you determine
focus, ask yourself what I call the “Oprah Question.”
Imagine that you had two minutes on the Oprah Winfrey show; yes,
only two minutes. Your book has been either self-published
or picked up by a book publisher, and Oprah has
heard about it. She had her people call you and invite you to speak
for only two minutes on her show. What would you tell the world
if you had only two minutes on Oprah? That is the essence of why
you started this project in the first place, of why you are indeed
writing a book.
