It Down > How To Keep Writing Daily
So you have some great book ideas and you want
to write a book. Good for you! Having these ideas
involves being inspired and that is truly a great experience. The
only problem with being inspired is that sometimes writers
expect that the inspiration alone will get the book written, as
if the great hand of the universe will come down and write the book
for them. The bad news is -- that is not possible. The good news
is -- that it is quite possible, but you have to help.
The way inspiration meets accomplishment is through good old-fashioned
discipline. The only way to write a book is to
write. And this should be done daily.
Think about your schedule. I know -- you are far too busy to write.
But think about your schedule anyhow --no, feel it. Take a few moments
to experience your day. Go through it in your mind. What time do
you wake? What do you do first? Do you go out to work? Do you commute
to get there? And what about later in your day? What responsibilities
do you have later on and what time do you retire?
As you are experiencing your day in your mind, notice how your
energy rises and falls. Notice when you have the most energy. Also
recognize when you have quiet times. Notice that you have regular routines.
You get up at a certain hour. You clean your teeth. You eat lunch
around noon. You get ready for bed and retire in a certain way at
a certain time. You would not think about not brushing your teeth,
would you? You would not think about not getting dressed when you go out
to work or business meetings.
I learned a valuable lesson about discipline when my eldest daughter
was only three years old and learning Suzuki piano. The teacher
advised us to make practicing piano as natural and regular as brushing
our teeth. Discipline --not wishing -- was what would turn her into
a pianist.
So it is with your writing. You will never write
a book unless you find a time during your day and write.
Develop a writing
strategy. Pick a time that is good for you, even if
it means getting up earlier or going to bed a little later. Don’t
worry. You will not mind the lack of sleep. As mentioned in the
article on how to get started,
once you start writing, the positive energy will
begin to feed you.
But something else happens too, and it is like magic. If you write
daily, the great hand of the universe does indeed come down to help
you. After a very short period of time, you will find that your
book writing becomes easier. Indeed, your book
will seem to start writing itself.
Book ideas will some at you out of the blue, when
you are driving, when you are in the shower, even when you are standing
on a street corner in the rain. You will have to carry around a
little notebook or audio recording device to capture these great
ideas before they fly away. You will become a virtual writing
machine. You’ll see. It happens every time.
Create a writing schedule
and stick to it. Exercise writing
discipline. It is only through writing daily that your book will
get done.
