Overcoming Writer's Block

What does a writer do when he or she sits down at the computer and nothing comes? That blank screen just stares back. The book writing coach recommends three things: be where you are, change pace or edit.

If you are not fully into your book writing, it will not happen. You will stare at a blank screen forever, or you will create a lousy book. Often writers cannot write because we are distracted. Something is on our mind and it is bugging us, or we have an anxious feeling about something and we do not know what it is. The first and best solution to overcome writer's block is to write exactly what you are experiencing in the moment, even if it seems to have nothing to do with your book. It may or may not become part of your book, but it certainly has a good chance of getting your writing unstuck. Even if you write, “I am so frustrated. I just cannot write today…etc.”  Just keep writing and see what comes. I have seen this technique work countless times. You will end up discovering something important either about your book or yourself that serves you immeasurably.

Another option to get your book writing unstuck is to change pace. Get up and get some water; do some exercise (I do a couple of karate katas); meditate; visualize yourself writing and completing your book; go for a brisk walk around the block; take a shower; go for a run; play with the cat or dog or child. In other words, change your chemistry. Speed it up, slow it down or change its focus, but only for a short while. Remember this is your writing time. If you spend it all with the dog…

There are writing days and editing days. There are indeed days writers just cannot write. That is because this is an editing day. Change hats. Sometimes our writing gets blocked because we have lost our direction. Often we do not even realize it, and writer's block is a good signal to help us get refocused. Today may be a good day to read over what you have been writing so far and see where you are going. Do not lose the day; use it. If you find yourself unable to write, sit back, relax, read over what you have been writing lately and see what comes up. You may find yourself discovering something completely new that you had not seen before, and your book writing will be greatly enhanced because you took this time to refocus.
