If you have read our article on how to get started writing a book, you know that the only way to start writing is to start writing. Period. No ifs, ands or buts. Just write. And if you have read our article on topic selection, you know what you are writing about. But where do you start?

Most people who have wanted to write a book for a while have reams of creative writing sitting in a box, drawer or file somewhere. What often stops them from writing is the sheer overwhelming nature of that batch of paper. “Yuck!” they think, at the idea of having to struggle through all that information. With minds full of negative thoughts like that, no wonder they don’t sort their book ideas out and start writing. They can’t even begin to develop writing strategies.

The very simple key to where to start your book writing is to ignore, for the moment, everything, yes everything that you have written before. Unless you have been working on your book over the past few months, your ideas will be old. Sit down now and just write. You have all the knowledge you need to get started writing right now.

If your book ideas are no longer exciting for you, you will find that you will not be able to write about them. Something else will come out of you. That is great. The key to starting writing is to be where you are right now. You will find that your old book ideas have metamorphosed into something new. That is why you could not write. You were trying to stir up ashes. People who come to me for writing help often suffer from this problem. Others are like the fellow below.

A new client started working with me recently. He thought he needed a ghostwriter because he did not know where to start his book writing. When I asked him to tell me about his book ideas, he whipped out an outline and started rattling off information. I could barely get a word in edgewise. He said he delivered seminars on the various chapters of his as yet unwritten book. I told him, if you can talk, you can begin to write. I reassured him that we could edit later, shooed him off the telephone and told him to go to his computer and start writing, to type what he just told me and e-mail it to me today!

Stop worrying about being perfect before you start your book writing. A potter does not start with a finished pot. A potter starts with mixing the clay, then throws it on the wheel, then shapes the pot. This is the main key to overcoming writer's block. Where to start writing is where you are right now, wherever that is. Be a potter. Get your book ideas out onto paper or into your computer. Before you know it, you will be crafting your writing into your published book.
