Self-publishing

So you have been looking at book publishers and have decided to publish your own book. Good for you. You have made a good choice. Self-publishing is fun and easier than you think.

The first step in self-publishing is editing. You need to get a great editor. He or she will give you feedback on various aspects of your book. You want to make sure your concepts are clear, your spelling and punctuation are effective and your references are correct. Poor spelling and punctuation are unacceptable in publishing, and quotes without proper referencing make a self-published book seem amateurish. Good editing will take care of all of these things for you, so this is not the place to save a few pennies. For more on editing see our article entitled Finding an Editor.

In order to publish a book, you will also need a great graphic designer. Make sure you choose a person who has previous experience with book cover and book jacket design. They will do your book cover design and format the interior of your book so it looks as if it were done by a professional book publisher. For more, see Finding a Graphic Designer.

If you want your published book to be sold in bookstores, you will need to contact the Library of Congress in the USA, The National Library of Canada or the equivalent in the country in which you wish to publish. They will assign you your ISBN number.

The last step in self-publishing is to find a printer. Shop around, ask colleagues, get prices, and, again, make sure you use a company that has published books before. Go see their set-up if you can, and make sure that they are easy to deal with.

The advantages of self-publishing include the fact that you have control over your product. You can give away as many copies as you like and you always have copies on hand when you are asked to speak. You can hire a distributor to get your books into bookstores and your profit margin is much higher.

Do not make the mistake of believing that royalty publishers market your book. They will not. No matter how your book is published, marketing will be up to you.

So create your own self-publishing company or hire Book Coach Press to do it for you, and publish that book!
