It Clear > Know Your Market
Who are you writing for? Before and throughout
the process of writing a book, writers
must keep in mind, “Who will buy?” If you start book
writing without giving this sufficient thought, you may
have no difficulty writing a book but you will
find yourself significantly challenged when it comes to marketing your book and generating sales.
Our book ideas come from our personal experiences,
but that is just the starting point. Nobody wants to read just about
you. They want to know how your experiences will help them make
their lives better. Throughout your book writing
you must constantly put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself three
questions.
First. What is the pain your book writing is trying
to heal? What are your potential readers suffering from or what
information are they missing that impels them to look for a solution?
The second question to ask yourself before writing a book
is: What, in your experience, entitles you to provide answers? Have
you had similar experiences? Are you educated specifically in that
subject area? Are you intimately acquainted with people who have
had the experiences? Is your book idea the subject of research?
How will your book resonate with your readers so they know that you
know who they are, how they feel and what they want?
Third, how can you heal your readers? What will you tell them that
will change their lives, make them better?
Constantly throughout your book writing, you must
do your best to see your book through the eyes of your potential
readers. Remember your writing purpose.
Your book writing is intended to make a difference,
but it cannot do that if, after you publish a book, it does not
sell. People must read the book, find that it makes a difference
in their lives, and tell all their friends about it. They will only
do that if you have taken the time to determine
your market, research it, read some other writers’ books,
determine how what you are saying is different, and zero right
in on your perfect client.
Then and only then, when you have understood your reader’s
pain, established that you have the goods to provide answers of
a different sort, found a
hook, and provided solutions in a way that pleases readers and heals their pain. Then and only then will you have
determined your market,
satisfied it and be able to sell your books.
