When book publishers produce a book for sale in bookstores, it
must have an ISBN number. If you are self-publishing and want bookstores
to carry your book you will need an ISBN also. This is easier than
you think.
You will need to contact the Library of Congress in the USA, The
National Library of Canada or the equivalent in the country in which
you wish to publish a book. They will assign you your ISBN number.
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. Note the word
International. This means that you need only do this in one country.
It is an internationally recognized way of cataloguing books. With
this number, bookstores and potential readers around the world will
be able to find your book.
In Canada, when book publishers want an ISBN number, they do it
online. Open your web browser and type, “get an ISBN number
Canada.” (Remember to replace the word Canada with the name
of the country in which you wish to publish a book.) In Canada you
will be directed to the web site of the National Library of Canada:
in the US to the Library of Congress. Fill in the online form, click
“send” and you are done. In Canada you will have your
ISBN number in your e-mail inbox within a few days.
Concerning getting the bar code on the back of your book, this
is why in the article on self-publishing, we recommend using a company
that has experience in book publishing. All you have to do is provide
the printer with the ISBN number. An experienced printer will have
the software required to produce the bar code.
