writing help > Get
It Down > Completing The First Draft
How does a writer know when the first draft is
done? Well, if you have been following our book writing program,
that is quite easy.
You have chosen a topic,
and you know your market. You
have found a great title and
your perfect book model. You created
your chapter outline and wrote
on a schedule until all your writing
was done.
You have used discipline to
ensure that you wrote every day.
When you got stuck, you followed the recommendations in our article
on overcoming writer's block.
You have written as much as you can on each chapter in your outline,
and believe that, as a writer, you have nothing
more to say on this topic.
Now it is time to stop. You have completed your first draft. Period.
Now it is time to print your writing, get a cup
of tea or whatever (non-alcoholic -- you need your wits about you)
and read what you have written. You are now proceeding to the second
draft of your book.
Now is when you will put on a different hat and see your creative
writing through more critical eyes. Although challenging,
this is the really fun part. To find out where to go from here,
check out the article on when to stop.
