Finding An Editor

Writing Help

If you are self-publishing your book, or even if you have a book proposal or manuscript that you want to show to literary agents or book publishers, you need a great editor to do your editing and proofreading. An editor will give you feedback on various aspects of your book. You want to make sure your concepts are clear, your spelling and punctuation are effective and your references are correct. Poor spelling and punctuation are unacceptable in publishing, and quotes without proper referencing make a self-published book seem amateurish. Good editing will take care of all of these things for you, so this is not the place to save a few pennies.

The Freelance Editors' Association describes four types of editing. Developmental editors work with you to develop your manuscript from initial concept, through successive drafts, to completion. Substantive editing involves identifying and solving problems of overall clarity, reorganizing sections, and rewriting segments to improve readability. Copy editors correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, ensure consistency of style, and read for overall clarity and sense, noting permissions required and checking for references. Proofreading involves comparing the latest stage of text with the preceding stage, marking discrepancies in text, and, when appropriate, checking for problems in page makeup, layout, color separation, or type.

It is critical that you use a professional book editor. Do not use someone because she is your friend’s sister and will give you a bargain. Make sure you choose a person who has previous experience editing books. They will ask you what level of editing you want, so be prepared to have a discussion with them about your editing needs.

There are companies that will offer to produce your book for you. They have experienced editors who offer all four types of editing. Book Coach Press is one of these. Alternatively, you could ask around, seeking information from others who have self-published books. They will often give you referrals. Talk to local book printers. They may have a list of editors with whom they have had some experience.

Last, go to your web browser and type in Book Editing. You will find more than eight million editing options to help you self-publish your book. If you choose to find an editor this way, we strongly suggest that you check references. You don’t get a second chance to publish your book, and good editing is crucial to give your self-published book that professional touch.
