Selling in Bookstores

Writing Help

As long as your book has an ISBN number, it can be sold in bookstores. If your book has been published by a royalty publishing company, it will be represented in their book marketing materials, and salespeople will mention it when they do their book publicity promotion meetings with book buyers.

If you have chosen to self-publish, you can also achieve book sales in bookstores. Independent bookstores will usually be happy to carry books published by local authors. Larger bookstore chains may carry your self-published book on consignment for a while, but to get your book into these large bookstore chains, you will do better to make arrangements with a distributor. There are book distributors who specialize in distributing self-published books and they can be easily found on the Internet.

What generates books sales, however, has very little to do with how your book has been published. People need to know that your book exists before they can buy it. To sell books, you will have to do some serious book marketing and book publicity. Book publishers will not do this for you. You can hire people who offer book publicity services. They can create press releases and get you interviews on radio and television.

Alternatively, you can get lists of radio and television stations and do book publicity on your own if you like, or you can hire a student to “smile and dial.” You will need a great press release, though, so it might be a good idea to get some help with that.

If your book is self-published, here are some statistics that you might want to keep in mind. Bookstores usually take about 40% of the cover price and distributors take 25%. In addition, distributors and bookstores can take up to a year to pay you for book sales. If you have self-published, book store sales may not make as much financial sense as selling on your web site and at your seminars or speaking engagements.

Book sales, no matter where, depend on the extent of your book marketing and book publicity efforts. The best idea is to offer your book for sale in as many different venues as possible, and get on with your book publicity efforts. You will see the results in book sales as you get your message out where it belongs, in the hands of readers.
