Write That Book: Get it Clear, Get it Down,

Who
Will Buy Yout Book?
So you have just been on Oprah and people are calling in and running
to the stores to buy your books. Who are these people? Are they
parents? Dog owners? People seeking spiritual growth? Science fiction
fans? Gardeners? People struggling financially? Baby boomers? People
wanting career advice? Who are your readers? Think about them, what
you want them to be getting from your book and how you hope that
they will be changed afterward.
It will be very important while you are writing, to put yourself
in your reader’s shoes. Years ago, the very first person who
asked for my advice on how to write a book was a colleague Bob Urichuck.
After he completed his first draft in an amazingly short period
of time, he brought it to me, as he did to others as well, asking
us to read it and give him some feedback. It was a book on fulfilling
your dreams, and it was full of exercises with each exercise built
on the previous one.
Bob’s book could not be read in one sitting. Well, it could,
but that would not provide the reader with the most benefit. One
had to work one’s way through it for it to be effective. So
I slowed down and pretended I was one of the readers. I did each
of the exercises in turn to see whether they would work, and was
able to advise Bob accordingly. Bob sharpened his already terrific
exercises, made further edits over the years, and his book has now
sold many copies in a variety of languages all over the world.
