Writer's
Block: When The Words Won’t Come
Editing Days
Some of my authors need to craft the words as they go along. That’s
all right. Everything is all right. I just do not want you to get
bogged down in perfection and never get past the first ten pages.
You see in movies sometimes, the frustrated author at the old typewriter,
typing a few lines, ripping the paper out of the typewriter, crumpling
it up into a ball, tossing it into the garbage can or onto the floor,
and then starting over again, only to repeat the process until the
room is littered with paper. Don’t go there. That author was
trying to write on an editing day.
Editing days are great. These are the days when you sit back with
a cup of tea and reread what you have written so far. Be gentle
with yourself. At this stage, you are working toward a first complete
draft. Like the potter, you are mixing the clay and creating material
to work with.
Editing days come up for a variety of reasons. The most common
one is when we are staring at a blank page and nothing comes up.
But there are other reasons for editing days.
Sometimes when you are writing, you will find that you have begun
to repeat yourself, and that you are scrolling back in the document
to see whether you already wrote what you are writing now. If you
find that is happening, it is certainly time to stop and review.
This happened to me one day with this book, but I was on a writing
roll and did not want to stop. A paradox.
