Where’s the Dough?
Some people say that there is no money in book production. Get
out there and do business, they say, don’t sit at home at
the computer writing. They are partially right. There is no money
in book writing if your only aim is to write the book.
After you have written your book, you have completed one phase.
You have poured your heart and soul and brain onto paper, CD or
your website, or all three. Somehow a funny thing happens after
people have produced their work. They think that it will sell itself.
Sorry, it will not. Even if you have great distribution and there
are copies of your book in every bookstore across the continent,
how are the books on the bookstores shelves different from the ones
in boxes in the warehouse or your garage? There is really no difference
at all except location. If you do not make a noise about your books,
they will stay where they are, wherever that is. Bookstores return
books that are not selling and expect a refund.
No matter who publishes your book, you are now in a different phase.
If you are like most writers, in your mind, you are now finished
with this project and want to get on with your next book. Great,
go for it, but something has to be done, by you, to get your current
book out there as well. Here are some of your options.
