Write That Book: Get it Clear, Get it Down,
Get it Out by Serena Williamson, PhD

in the Middle, Maybe
So you have an outline, you have a regular writing time each day
or a particular writing day each week, and you are getting ideas
fast and furiously. Now what? Now you write. Some people worry that
they have to start at the beginning and write right through. You
don’t have to do anything except write. Period.
Write however it works for you. If you prefer to start at the beginning
and plough right through, so be it.
With this book about writing, I am creating it in order, from beginning
to end, in one file. Why? Because it is an ordered process. I am
imagining that you are one of my one-on-one, six-month book-coaching
clients, and I am walking you through the stages. I need to imagine
you writing your book, sitting here asking me questions and moving
through the process. This project needs to be done in order as I
imagine you completing your book.
My poetry was also written in order because it was written journal
style, chronologically. It is an autobiography of sorts. Susan’s
book, Save Some for Me was also written in order because it tells
a chronological story. However, when I wrote the book Surviving
Organizational Insanity: Keeping Alive at Work, once I had an outline,
I worked with each chapter separately as the mood took me. That
book was written in the heat of passion fuelled by anger and frustration.
I was struggling to survive in a toxic organization and writing
was healing me. I worked out my solutions to complex problems in
that book, and I wrote best when I was passionate about the subject
at hand.
