The
Publishing Decision
Royalty Publishing
There are three ways to go when producing your book. Royalty publishing,
self-publishing or contract publishing.
Royalty publishing is the kind of publishing that most people think
of as the ideal. It may not be so in your case. In this kind of
publishing, you submit a query letter, proposal and sample chapter
or two to a large number of publishers who specialize in your type
of book. Your hope is that one of them will like what you send and
agree to foot the bill for producing your book, and even give you
an advance against sales. You do not have to wait to finish your
book to do this. If you choose this option, as soon as you have
a sense of where you book is going, write your proposal. Whether
you find a publisher yourself or work with a literary agent, you
will need this document. Excellent resources on proposal writing
are Susan Page’s The Shortest Distance Between You and
a Published Book and Michael Larsen’s How to Write
a Book Proposal.
