Find Your Model
Now that you know what your book is about, it is time for you to
do a little dreaming and a little research. It starts in your own
home.
Go to your home library and pull about a dozen of your favourite
books off the shelf. Make sure they are books that you really love.
Don’t go into your head first and try to think about content.
That is not the issue. We are going to the other side of your brain.
Just go to the shelf, skim over the books and pull the ones that
appeal to you and make a pile. Then review the pile for common elements.
You are looking for colour, style, size, voice, anything that will
give you a sense of what appeals to you in a book.
Now go to a large bookstore and head for the section that will
house your book. Look through the shelves to find where your book
will sit, and which books will be on either side of it. Now leaf
through the other books on your subject to see which aspects appeal
to you about the various books.
