Teenage Turbulence: Stormy Years Without a Father
Katrina was the second eldest and the only girl in the family. You would think she would be a tomboy with four brothers but she was quite the opposite. Tiny and very feminine, she loved frilly dresses, Barbie dolls and being a little mother to her younger brothers. Far from being subservient to her brothers, Katrina often ruled the roost. She and Nathan were great friends and the younger siblings looked up to her. Katrina's strong personality brushed up against Rodney constantly, so now that he was out of the picture, life would be much easier for her, or so I thought.
Growing up through those teenage years is hard for all children and even harder without a father. What I was not aware of, was that it is especially difficult for daughters, as they desperately need their father's approval to move out into the world. Communication with Rodney was nonexistent. He was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and never wrote or phoned, so Katrina searched for fatherly approval in all the wrong places.
My cute little girl had a mature sensible mind of her own. She always rose above the pack and would never be coerced into following their fads or fashions. I worried about her being a goody two shoes, a "Sandra Dee" character, and not fitting in with the high school crowd, until the day she changed. She joined the pack and away from me. Every parent, mother, father, single or married knows that sickening, helpless feeling as you see your child walking the wrong path, and it seems there is nothing you can do to stop it. Punk rock was the fad in the '80s and this was Katrina's way of rebelling. And rebel she did. I was never sure if she would survive and I had grave doubts that I would.
