Why are so many people disappointed with jobs today? There seems to be an acceptance that work really isn’t the place to find meaning, joy, happiness, or even a close matching with one’s interests. In fact, in this down economy, it’s a place to go to collect a paycheck and hope the layoffs don’t hit you. This is sad!

When I ask people deeper questions about what they really want to do, I generally get blank painful stares. These are looks of morbid acceptance that no one at the office really cares about what anyone would actually rather do. After almost 25 years in corporate America, I can understand this. Business is about quick results and improved efficiency. Finding meaning and fulfillment in work can take time and seem quite inefficient.

In many ways, finding one’s perfect vocational day is very similar. It requires a long look at one’s self from the inside out. The good news is that finding one’s purpose can provide the energy to consider new vocational options.
