Open MindsWhere Do We Go From Here? by Rudi Verspoor

Each person who enters the natural healing arts has undertaken his or her own journey of self-discovery. It is, despite the current growing popularity of the natural healing approach and alternatives to conventional medical practice, a path still less travelled for practitioners. To set out along a path that is not that marked by external authority but by an inner urging of the heart and conscience requires one to continually overcome fear and doubt and to have a commitment to truth over acceptance, monetary gain or status. Each such seeker of the truth within must be willing to become again like a child in order to learn new approaches, accept new insights and then integrate them into the older world-view. And yet, if we are to attain a true medical science grounded firmly in nature there must be pioneers who seek the unexplained.

This book is the story of several of these pioneering journeys by practitioners who started out with a more traditional approach and then found themselves searching for something that lay beyond the conventional. This search has taken them to looking beyond the outer appearances of illness to the inner meaning of symptoms and pain. In undertaking this journey, each practitioner has gained a deeper appreciation of the journey that each of their patients are on, and where on their path to healing they might be found.

We, as practitioners, cannot help our patients in terms of their inner development much beyond where we ourselves have gone. The deeper approach to the removal of disease and imbalance to allow for the restoration of health at all levels – body, mind, soul and spirit – demands a capacity for discernment that can only have come from the inner journey of the practitioner. In a sense, we are all, patient and practitioner, travelers along the road to soundness and wellness. It is our patients who become our teachers and encourage us to go further in our own inner journey and understanding of disease and remediation. To those who have, more is given. Where we open our hearts and minds to see and hear differently, we receive so much more and are then able to also give so much more.
