from the Couch: Wholistic Psychotherapy and Healing
by Mary Rothschild
During my second year internship, one of my patients was a 50-year-old,
chronic schizophrenic named George. No one else wanted his case,
as he was never going to leave Boston State Mental Hospital. He
shuffled instead of walked, always wore slippers, grey, food stained
pants grabbed at random from the hospital laundry, a plaid shirt,
a tweed jacket and a polka dot bow tie.
One night, a young man was admitted to the ward who thought he
was Moses. The next day, George appeared wearing a yarmulke (skull
cap) and told me he was a rabbi. When I told him he wasn't and that
he was Catholic, he told me that he was indeed a rabbi and that
Moses himself had told him so. I laughed and told him that I couldn’t
argue with an authority like that.
On my last day there, George took my hand, kissed it, and told
me that I was his friend and he would miss me. I did the only thing
I could do — I cried.
