What a day this has been! I have just let a patient go from my
practice. I am loath to do this, as this patient and her family
have been involved in my practice for about 25 years. However, it
seems that our ethos and direction have moved away from our original
contract. The bigger the front, the bigger the back is an old macrobiotic
expression. This lady originally came to my practice because of
a sore back. We dealt with her and her family for many years. However,
this morning our dialogue seemed to shift. Our original contract
seemed to have been broken.
Hence, we parted company today and I feel a deep sense of loss
because I become involved with my patients on many levels of body,
mind and spirit. She seems to have gone the way of the drug route
versus a natural herb, vitamin and homeopathic route. I am not against
drugs - I don't throw the baby out with the bath water, but when
someone makes excessive demands and wants to ride herd over me,
something within rebels.
I am a compassionate physician and one who has a great deal of
patience and willingness to look at alternative medicine and alternative
therapies. In this day and this age of paradigm shifts, I have been
experiencing a new thread in the practice of medicine.
One could ask how you will be different after reading this chapter.
My reward or cue is spiritual. If anyone of you gets a flavour of
how alternative/complementary medicine augments traditional western
medicine, I will be ecstatic with joy.
