1: On Your Couch
There it is. Again. That little voice in the back of your head that
you have been avoiding, that has been telling you things are not quite
right. Today, you're exhausted, and can't even summon up the energy
to find something else to do, to keep busy so you won't have to think
about it.
As you look back, you can see that it has been coming on for some
time. Sure, you have been doing fine at work. You managed to meet
all of your responsibilities there. The patients are well cared for,
the paperwork is completed, and you are getting to most of the meetings.
You even make time to check and answer your emails, glance through
the journals and surf your favourite sites on the Internet. However,
at the end of the workday, you have little left to give. You really
need a break and just want to be left alone.
In the past few months, there has been a difference. You realize that
you are not enjoying your work as much as you used to do. You have
been more negative and cynical, and more easily frustrated. You are
feeling more irritable with staff, colleagues and patients. The paperwork
has not been completed in your usual efficient way. You push through
the day, but at the end of it, you're done.
Trying to handle what others want from you is too much, and you start
to avoid people.
