Psychological Aspects
One of the most important goals of therapy is to gain insight into
who we are, why we get ourselves into stressful situations and stay
there, and why we cannot stop doing this. This is the "Psychological"
part of the biopsychosocial approach to formulating an understanding
of a situation.
We explore the patient’s background history, look at what life
was like while the patient was growing up, and what it was like to
grow up in his or her home. This is just the perception of what happened,
not necessarily what did occur. This is never meant to blame or criticize,
but to understand that while that situation did occur, perhaps for
valid reasons and people did their best, it may still have had a negative
impact. The goal is to define this impact, especially on the sense
of self, and to reduce its effect in adulthood.
Issues Arising From Past Experiences
It is important to understand that our sense of self arises from our
past experiences as a child. We establish this sense of self from
conclusions, which we drew as children, based on how we perceived
we were treated, compared to others. Remember, this may not have been
the reality, but it is our perception of the reality.
