Dealing With Stress - Basic Training
We have seen that stress in medicine can come from a variety of sources, and has its origins in biopsychosocial factors.
The Number One Cause of Stress
Regardless of the origin of the stress, it always comes down to one main cause - a sense of lack of control. In any situation in which we feel stress, it is because we feel a lack of choice, a lack of control. We feel stuck, trapped, with little or no options.
The Number One Solution to Stress
If feeling lack of control is the number one cause of stress, then the number one way to deal with it is to challenge this perception. We need to remember that we actually have more control than we think we have.
Four Steps to Managing Stress
There are four steps to managing stress, and maintaining a sense of control:
1. Identify the stressor.
2. Recognize that you have more control than you think you have.
3. Identify what parts of the stressor you can and cannot control.
4. Focus on what you can control; learn to cope with what you cannot control.
