True Stories of an Irish Upbringing and Other
lies by Dan Daneen
Price $ 17.00>>
Having lived the required number of years that the Bible
forecast that is three score years and ten, I feel obligated
to subject the foolish to a brief summary of my distant
youth. I have now lived in Canada for almost fifty years. On
looking back, I appreciate the wonderful gift of my Irish roots and
the invaluable memories of my homeland.
I have written this book not as an accurate account of my youth
in Ireland, partly because my youth was long ago and I have
forgotten the details, but more because I feel we should never let
the truth get in the way of a good story. Nothing inhibits a good
laugh and a story more than cool, logical thinking and accurate
reporting. Most of what is told did happen to me but not always
exactly as I have told it. I have embellished many of the tales that
I am about to tell. An astute reader will note that I have only
included the stories that I remembered and I have left out the ones
that I have forgotten!
Names, dates and locations have been changed not to protect the
innocent, but rather to protect the humility of the guilty. There
is a certain shame that falls on those who are not smart enough
to get into a little mischief once in a while. How dull life would
be if we all conformed to the norm. There was in Ireland a very
thin line between guilty and innocent, and in many events the discussion
of these should never come up. Most people may not want to know
exactly about whom I am telling because “ignorance is bliss!” But
if that is the case, why are not more people happy?
