Superstitions
and Ghosts
I am not superstitious! I just do not like to take chances! My
first reaction was to leave chapter 13 out. But then chapter
14 would have been the thirteenth chapter. I considered
having a chapter 12A, but then I would still have to have a
chapter 13. So it is a good thing that I am not superstitious. I
never walk under ladders and I am very careful to never let a
black cat cross my path. I would never start a new job on a Friday
and I know that if you break a mirror you will have seven years
of bad luck. These are not superstitions! They are facts of life!
I think most of us who grew up in Ireland are very superstitious.
We believe in banshees, ghosts, fairies and leprechauns and
we assume that all other smart people do as well. Because if
we do not believe in them, we will never have a day of good
luck and that is the truth. I am sure that the leprechauns
really do have a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow and all we
have to do to get it is to find the end of a rainbow. If we are
able to catch a leprechaun, he will give us his own pot of gold.
Fairies and leprechauns are (not were) very much the same, being
benevolent and kind, and usually live in the woods. They have an
affinity for children with whom they play and explain nature.
Leprechauns are old men and are considered gnomes in other
countries. I have never been able to work out how we get more
of these little people when there are no women leprechauns to
have baby leprechauns. Come to think about it, I have never seen
a baby leprechaun...
