How can I talk to my health care professionals?
Talk to your doctor
You’re not feeling well, so you go to see your doctor.
Scenario One: You say, “I seem to be hungry constantly and
if I don’t eat on time, I get dizzy and really irritable”.
Your doctor says, “Do you instantly feel better when you eat?”
When you nod, she says, “Maybe your blood sugar is dropping
too much. Let’s do some tests and explore this a bit.”
Scenario Two: You say, “I think I may have hypoglycemia”.
Your doctor says, “OK, let’s have a look at how you
are feeling and check all of the possibilities”.
These are ideal situations, and maybe you are one of the lucky
people whose doctor understands hypoglycemia in non-diabetics, or
at least is open-minded enough to explore the possibility. As in
Ben’s case, the doctor will probably refer you to a nutritionist
or give you some diet guidelines. He may still order additional
tests to ensure that there aren’t other underlying problems,
but you will feel confident that you are on the road to recovery.
Unfortunately, most people don’t have an experience that
positive. More often, your doctor won’t know about hypoglycemia,
outside of diabetes, anyway. And if he has heard of it, chances
are good that he thinks it is a fad problem, and that those who
think they have hypoglycemia are really hypochondriacs or are suffering
from heart murmur, depression or panic attacks.
