Continuing the journey
You can do it
Hypoglycemia is a daunting condition that requires work to treat,
especially when it hides in a crowd of linked conditions like those
listed in Chapter 9. There is hope, though. As you read the personal
stories that introduced each chapter, you met some people struggling
with hypoglycemia. They have not fully gained control of their symptoms,
but they all have hope that better days are coming. You also met
hypoglycemics who are already living very full, very productive
lives. This is what you can aspire to. It may not be easy, but you
can improve how you feel and how well you function. You can gain
a measure of control by changing and improving the way you take
care of yourself. I challenge you to start today by changing one
thing. Here are some ideas for a first change:
- Add a protein snack mid-morning. You’ll be pleasantly
surprised by how much more you will get done before lunch.
- Instead of coffee in the late afternoon, have water with lemon,
or perhaps herbal tea. Have a protein snack with it, and after
a few days, you probably won’t even miss that one cup.
- Choose to skip one cigarette break each day, and treat yourself
to a protein snack instead.
- Join your co-workers for lunch instead of eating at your desk.
You’ll enjoy your meal more and you’ll get in the
socializing you may miss when you start skipping cigarette breaks.
