Treating
Mom
As I witnessed Jordan’s huge shifts, I could see the potential
for my own healing. Intrinsically, I knew I was sitting on a number
of time bombs given the unresolved emotional issues that I still
carried from childhood. I was plagued with heavy grief and anger
sustained from my mother’s suicide when I was only eight years
old and my father’s early death from a heart attack when
I was seventeen.
Beyond those events in my immediate family was the early death
of my mother’s sister who contracted a mysterious cancer that
developed as a lump on her neck. Her brother, my uncle, was estranged
for illicit behaviors including stealing money from his own mother.
I have one surviving Aunt who provides a link to the past.
My mother’s father was deranged and he was committed to a
mental institution when she was a child. I never knew him and hardly
anyone ever spoke of him. I did track him down at one point while
I was in University, however, both my aunts forbade me to see him
and I respected their wishes. I suspect that they must have sustained
certain abuses for them to be so adamant. I modeled their retention
of unspoken plights.
