Mayors
Bytown held its first municipal election in 1847.
Expected to be a raucous affair, it proved
remarkably calm and ordered. On the other hand, the
candidate predicted to win the mayoralty, John Scott, did just
that, becoming Bytown's first mayor that same year.
The first mayor to head the newly created City of Ottawa was
John Bower Lewis, elected in 1855. Neither he nor Scott is
profiled in this section. Instead, two twentieth-century
mayors have been chosen: Harold Fisher, whose most
visible legacy was the Ottawa Civic Hospital, now known
as the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital; and feisty,
colourful Charlotte Whitton, the first female mayor of a
large Canadian city.
