Capital Lives by Valerie Knowles

Entrepreneurs
From its infancy up until the First World War, Ottawa's
entrepreneurs were to be found chiefly among the
lumberers, many of whom hailed originally from the
United States. Some of these timber barons, notably John
Rudolphus Booth, didn't confine themselves to creating a
lumber empire. They also branched into ancillary enterprises
such a railways and ships. But there were also home-grown
entrepreneurs. Into this category fall men like William
Wylie, the man who spearheaded the founding of the highly
successful Ottawa Car Company, Thomas Ahearn, an
inventor who was involved in major electrification projects
across Canada, and Cecil Morrison, the co-founder of
Morrison Lamothe Bakery.
