Eagle Born to Fly: Finding Life Beyond
Depression by Sharon C. Matthies
Price $15.00 >>
Part 1 - Getting There
Tumbling Through the Teens
After the dream, life started interrupting my dark thoughts, and
I began to meet kind people and find myself in good places. Picton
United Church became an integral part of my life, involving me in
everything from piano lessons and bell choir to teaching nursery
Sunday School and even becoming a junior elder of the United Church.
There were many caring people who made a significant difference.
My heart is still warmed and nurtured by the memory of tender grandfatherly
hugs and loving grandmotherly snuggles from every corner of the
congregation. Reverend Verne Zufelt was a much-cherished gift in
my life at the time, and remains one of my all-time favourite people.
And, oh, the music…some of the most breathtaking music I’ve
ever heard came from those early years in Picton United. I still
remember often looking up at the ceiling, wondering if it could
withstand the wondrous magnificence of those hymns soaring out of
the pipe organ with such power and majesty. Surely the angels themselves
must have gathered there more than once to listen and soak in the
glory of the music, especially during some of the memorable Doug
Reynold solos.
As well as being a member of two of the church choirs, I also became
involved as a team leader in a youth group that traveled to different
churches throughout Ontario, providing weekend retreats for other
youths.
