Eagle Born to Fly: Finding Life Beyond
Depression by Sharon C. Matthies
Price $15.00 >>
Part 1 - Getting There
Soaring Seaside
I’m an avid Henri Nouwen fan, and have read many of his books.
His Reaching Out and Out of Solitude have been well-thumbed mentors
for much of my life. His philosophy about interruptions has become
deeply embedded into my daily living. In Out of Solitude he notes
that most of us are diligently trying to go about our work, but
get terribly frustrated and impatient with all of the seemingly
insignificant little interruptions that keep us from doing whatever
it is that we think we’re supposed to be doing.
He proposes that since those interruptions are what we’re
doing, they are what we’re supposed to be doing. The interruptions
themselves are our work and our life! What a radical possibility.
We think that the detours keep us from living our true lives –
but if those are the things that are actually happening to us, then
those are our true lives.
When I got off the train in Halifax on that cold Tuesday morning
in February, I had every intention of going back to St. Paul’s
in the fall. This was just a little blip on my radar. My plan was
to get a job, save enough to pay next year’s tuition and then
move back to Ottawa in September. But instead, I found a job on
Wednesday and started working in a day care centre the following
Monday, and then stayed seaside for 17 years.
