Eagle Born to Fly: Finding Life Beyond
Depression by Sharon C. Matthies

Part 4 - Relapse and Rebound
Slip-Sliding Again
Immediately after Mom’s death, I buried myself in my work,
partly because of unrelenting deadlines, and partly so I wouldn’t
have to dwell on the agony of absence, or deal with the inner child
who was despondent and frightened by this newfound orphanhood. I
was just entering my fourth year of working as the network administrator
and computer tech for a small company.
When I began my job in September of 1998, there were only a handful
of computers. Over the four years, working long hours and multi-tasking
often to the point of performing as many as seven different tasks
at once, I built the network up to incorporate over 75 computers.
My responsibilities included building, installing and maintaining
all of the servers, printers, cabling and other peripherals, as
well as waging vigilant war on the ever-evolving computer virus
front, and managing most of the myriad of software, e-mail and user
training.
It was not unusual to work 10 to14 hour days, including weekends,
come crashing home late at night, sit on the stairs and cry because
I was too exhausted to untie my boots. And when insomnia kept me
awake at night, I would log on to my home computer and research
troubleshooting issues in preparation for the next day’s onslaught.
All of this with only two weeks of vacation each year, very little
monetary compensation, and even less tangible appreciation for my
hard work.
