Eagle Born to Fly: Finding Life Beyond
Depression by Sharon C. Matthies

Part 3 - Getting Out of There
Farewell to Nova Scotia
Besides communication and compromise, I think that one of the other
most valuable things we can do within any relationship, whether
spousal, family or even friendships, is to build an exclusive collection
of unique memories together. The kind of memories that become the
stories we tell each other around the Christmas table and at family
reunions, complete with a repertoire of insider words that mean
nothing to an outsider, but which spark laughter or raised eyebrows
and knowing glances between those "in the know.” We didn’t
know we were doing it at the time, but that’s what André
and I spent our first few years together accomplishing.
I guess it’s natural for new couples to do that cocooning
thing, and I had experienced it before, but from the perspective
of being one of those left on the outside looking in and not quite
understanding how I could have been so quickly abandoned by my former
spinster cohorts. Now I understand that it was never about me, about
them abandoning me, but about new couples needing to carve out this
new life together, navigating through the unfamiliar territory of
now being three-in-one…you, me and us…and struggling
to maintain integrity within each unique-yet-totally-interdependent
facet of that triune couple-ship.
Like most new couples, we went through our "honeymoon"
phase, fighting over silly little things like how to cut green peppers,
but making it all worthwhile and right again by making up later.
