Part 5- Life Around the Bend
Becoming my Own Best Friend
Talina was seven years old that Christmas back in 1999. The way
the story goes is that she was browsing the tables at her church’s
Christmas craft and bake sale. She stopped to admire the beautifully
decorated gingerbread people at one particular table. The woman
behind the table noticed Talina’s interest in the cookies
and suggested that she buy one as a Christmas gift." But I
already have a gift for everybody," Talina replied. "Well, then, why don’t you buy one for yourself?" Talina’s
eyes brightened as she agreed, "Yeah, that’s a great
idea!"
Then she bought the cookie, took it home, wrapped it up and put
it under the tree, way back in behind the other gifts.
Christmas morning arrived about a week later. Talina’s father,
my brother Rob, supervised the handing out of the tree gifts. As
is their tradition, (and now the whole family’s), each person
gives out his or her gifts, one at a time, and everyone else waits
until that gift is opened before going on to the next person’s
gift. This tradition provides a much gentler atmosphere without
the distraction and chaos of everyone ripping into the gifts at
the same time. It also significantly stretches out the gift exchange
portion of the day, and what childlike heart doesn’t enjoy
that!
