Part I: What business are you and your people really in
and why?
Understand Your Business
“Get yer act together.” - Captain Bob
It was Monday morning. Ed Mast, President of Applied Technology
Inc. sat alone at the long table in the ATI boardroom. His business
was not doing well. He was not doing well.
At the very same moment, 300 years earlier, Captain Bob Mast, an
ancestor of Ed Mast, had sat at a wooden table in his Captain’s
cabin aboard his pirate ship the Cutlass. In contrast to his descendent,
Ed, Captain Bob felt great. He and his crew were very successful.
His crew and officers were loyal to him and to each other. He was
also founder and chairman of the World Professional Pirates’
Association. Life was good. No, life was fantastic!
Outside of his pirate business (for that is what it was, a business),
he had invested in a successful barrel-making business. Barrels
were the container of choice, so it had not been a very difficult
decision to make when the opportunity to invest had been presented
to him. Yet, above all, Captain Bob was a pirate. He left the problems
of barrel-making to others, content to collect his share of the
profits on each visit to his homeport.
