Part I: What business are you and your people really in
and why?
Strategy Applied At Sea
“Always do the unexpected.” - Captain Bob
Almost two weeks had passed since Captain Bob and the ATI managers
had met. It was early on a Saturday morning. Ed Mast was sipping
coffee with his wife in the kitchen. Deborah Deck was loading the
dishwasher, while talking to her two sons. Richard Keel was washing
his truck in his driveway. Jason Sail was planing a piece of oak
in his woodworking shop. Valerie Cannon was working in the office.
Schlapp!
Ed disappeared from his kitchen, leaving his wife puzzled as to
how Ed could have been there one instant and gone the next. Deborah’s
two teenaged boys were leaving the kitchen and did not notice her
disappearance. Typical boys! Richard’s pail of wash water
was left beside his truck, the water still sloshing in the pail.
Jason’s woodworking shop was left empty, the last wood shaving
floating to the floor. In Valerie’s now empty office, the
computer printer had just begun spewing out a spreadsheet, which
she would not be there to read.
Ed, Deborah, Richard, Jason and Valerie all appeared on the deck
of the Devil’s Chariot. Ed and Richard, being jostled by rushing
crewmen, were almost knocked from their feet.
