“Loyalty works both ways.” - Captain Bob
As part of the process of selling off the least successful business
units, Ed was faced with a tough question. He had retained a specialized
consulting firm to sell ATI’s consumer, industrial, and commercial
products, as well as the recycled Moffat business units.
The experts had issued an initial report to ATI, recommending a
strategy intended to maximize the sale proceeds. Ed was troubled
by the report’s conclusion that ATI must be prepared to lay
off approximately thirty employees in the affected business units
to demonstrate better profitability.
As a shareowner, who would benefit more than anyone else from increasing
the profitability and therefore the potential selling price for
the business units, Ed understood all too clearly the benefits of
such a decision. The consultants’ report showed the financial
benefits with absolute clarity. The consultants had even expanded
on their report during a special presentation in his office. It
made total sense, financially.
