Ahoy Mates: Leadership Lessons from Successful Pirates Part II: Are you and your people performing to your very best?

Energize Your Followers

“Leaders must see all followers as volunteers who have to want to do their very best.” - Captain Bob

Captain Bob posed a question. “Hear me mates; if I walked into yer business and talked to each of yer people, would they be able to tell me the following:
• What business ye are in?
• Yer purpose as a business?
• Yer top three goals for this year?
• How important their personal jobs and performance are to fulfilling yer company’s
purpose and meeting yer top three goals?

“If most of my pirates did not know how they contributed to our success, I would not expect to see them working as if their lives depended on it when we are chasing and capturing prizes. If they did not know how they fit into the overall picture, we could not repeatedly outmaneuver and outshoot the Spanish navy with its conscripted sailors. Without the commitment of our men when we need it, we would not survive long.

“Are ye with me? Ye need each team and each man, from top to bottom of yer business to be a force in himself, taking responsibility for helping to achieve yer goals. Ye start with corporate-wide objectives and strategies developed by yer top managers. Then ye assign goals to each of yer businesses or teams, and ye ask them to develop game plans that fit within and are a part of yer organization’s strategies and that will attain their assigned goals. Ye repeat the process throughout the organization ‘til, even yer front- line people are given goals to attain, and asked to develop plans on how they will attain their assigned goals which in turn will contribute to yer organization’s goals."
