Ahoy Mates: Leadership Lessons from Successful Pirates Part I: What business are you and your people really in and why?

Create Your Desired Future

“Dream it, plan it, do it.” - Captain Bob

“So, what should our mission statement be”?” asked Ed.

“What do ye mean by ‘mission statement’?” asked Captain Bob.

“It is a statement of an organization’s purpose,” explained Richard.

“Great,” replied the pirate. “What else can ye tell me about yer mission statement?”

“I think that it should be based on market place needs; needs that we can truly understand. It should also be a statement that people find compelling and will want to buy into,” said Deborah.

“It should be a purpose that we can fulfill successfully, but that will challenge us,” added Richard.

“Ideally, it should serve as a decision-making guide to everyone in the organization. When questions arise about new business opportunities, the organization’s leaders should pose the question – does that idea fall within our mission statement?” added Jason.
