Writing Case Study: Eagle Born to Fly: Finding Life Beyond
Depression by Sharon C. Matthies
My story and book had been simmering in my soul for over 20 years
before I finally got the courage to write it down. I woke up one
morning with the first line in my head, typed those words into the
computer and then kept typing for two weeks. At the end of those
two weeks I knew I had something, but didn’t have a clue what
to do with it.
Challenge
The challenge for me was finding a way to publish the book without
losing my voice. Eagle is a very personal story and needed to be
told in my own way in my own voice. I was afraid that mainstream
publishers would conform it into one of those “10-step Cure-All”
self help books. So I began to research other options.
Solution
It was a bewildering world of options out there, many of them
expensive. It was often unclear exactly what those expenses covered.
I was ready to give up when I met Susan Jennings. Susan shared her
experience of self-publishing her book through Book Coach Press.
After further investigation, I contacted Serena and began the process
of transforming those two weeks worth of typing into Eagle Born
to Fly.
Results
The cover of Eagle Born to Fly continues to awe me. I’m
awed that Eagle is actually born and on the shelves of local bookstores.
Most of all, I’m awed by the breathtaking ability of Don Lanouette,
Book Coach Press’s, design chief, to read and understand my
book so well that he was able to bring its essence to life on the
cover. Don’s cover is Eagle’s primary selling point.
It is what initially draws people into the book, where they can
then journey with me through my story.
"Serena, Don and Leslie [editor} of Book Coach Press
were the winds beneath the wings of Eagle Born to Fly. They expertly
transformed my “two-week-something” into my dream
come true.
