Writing Case Study: Ahoy Mates! Leadership Lessons from
Successful Pirates by Robert Garrow
As a facilitator of innovative thinking and strategic planning
sessions, clients saw Bob (Robert) Garrow as a catalyst for innovative
thinking and commitment. Bob had also created a series of imaginative
newsletters drawing leadership lessons from unusual sources including
fur traders, dog sled races and big name passenger trains.
The Challenge
Bob had toyed with the idea of writing a book on leadership but
saw no future in producing just another book to join the 10,000
previously shelved books on the subject. He needed someone to join
him in his quest for fresh perspectives on writing about leadership
principles. He also needed help to break the project down into bite
sized “chunks”.
The Solution
Bob met Serena Williamson at an association meeting. Discussions
quickly followed. Bob brought Serena his first manuscript. Together
they set about to develop a more fun-filled means of communicating
his message.
In three months of weekly one hour meetings, Ahoy Mates took shape.
An enlightened pirate captain, “Captain Bob”, was created.
He time-shifted himself and a modern day management team between
the eighteen and twenty-first centuries to experience a surprisingly
enlightened pirate approach to leadership.
Once the focus had been developed, the book began to write itself
(just as Serena had promised it would!) More and more, Bob found
himself focusing on characters and pirate language. Each chapter
followed naturally, leading to the climax where the modern day management
team, stranded on a pirate ship, found itself out-gunned and out-manned,
with their very survival hinging on their innovative thinking capabilities.
Results
Ahoy Mates! is a quick, fun-filled escape into the best parts of
the pirate world. It is also Bob’s best branding tool for
his Pirate Leadership speaking and consulting business.
Serena Williamson helped me to get my thoughts down
on paper in an innovative and fun-filled book that demonstrates
timeless leadership principles, and the kind of innovative thinking
that I can bring to my speaking engagements and consulting work
in strategic planning.
